Go n-eirí linn!

Seachtain na Gaeilge 2019 was greatly enjoyed by Rang 3 with a performance of Báidín Fheilimí and Mise agus Leipreachán Bob and culminating with great performances from all the classes during Lá sa Halla.

6th class demonstrating some of their skills in Gymnastics. Gymnastics and Aquatics are our PE priorities in Term 2.

3rd Class celebrating World Book Day 2019.

Well done to the pupils and teachers in 5th class for their entry in Science Blast 2019 in the RDS, Dublin. The project they did on water ph was described by the judges as 'very impressive'. They won a lovely trophy.

Mr Z/Scott Ziglinski visited the school on 1st February, 2019 to work on some science experiments with the senior classes 3rd-6th. They learned a lot about friction and gravity.

Thanks to Sinéad Nolan from CMRF Crumlin who called out to the school on 1st February, 2019 to speak to the children about how the €4416 will be spent in the hospital.

Congratulations to all our pupils, teachers and parents who helped earn our second Active School Flag. Special thanks to the pupils on our Active School Committee who put in such alot of work.

Thanks to Jim Walsh, local historian, who visited the school in December. He worked with 4th class on the local history of Balscadden and with 5th and 6th classes on the history of Balbriggan.

Emily Whelan, past pupil and International soccer player with Ireland visited the school. Thanks for all your patience answering all the children's questions and for being such an inspiring role model for our pupils. Thanks to the 6th class pupils who presented Emily with her photograph.

Congratulations to 6th Class on their completion of the Marathon Kids Challenge in Morton Stadium, Santry. They have been building up their kilometres over the past number of weeks. They have now completed the challenge and they received their medals and t-shirts!

Our Run Around Europe Challenge is going very well! Our Active School Committee members have been using their Kilometre Counters to clock up the Kilometres. So far we have reached London, Brussels, Amsterdam, Paris, Cohenhagen, Berlin, Andorra, Prague, Vienna, Ljubljana, and now we are at Bratislava. Our Active School Walkway has been turned into an Active Runway!

Thanks to 6th Class who hosted a Science Expo in the school hall to kick off Science Week 2018. All the classes visited the expo to learn about science and see actual experiments being carried out.

Best wishes to Noeleen Halligan on her retirement as SNA in the school from pupils, staff, Parents' Association and Board of Management. Tulip the goat even made an appearance on her last day!

6th class invited our junior infants to their classroom to play Halloween games. Our 5th class also invited senior infants to their classroom for some Halloween fun!

Fitter Younger organised our Marathon Relay on Monday, 22nd October!  Thanks to everyone who took part, including pupils, parents and staff! All funds will go towards St John's Ward, Crumlin Children's Hospital. Sponsorship cards should be returned as soon as possible.

Congratulations to Emily Whelan, past pupil of our school, who made her Senior International Football debut with Ireland against Poland on 9th October, 2018. We are very proud of Emily. She was also the youngest member of the squad!

First Class went on a Tree Walk to Ardgillan Park on 3rd October to celebrate Tree Day 2018. It was a very active trip where they observed the different tree and leaf types as well as engaging in some land art.

Congratulations to Carla Rowe and the Dublin Ladies Football team on winning a second All-Ireland title in a row. We are very proud of Carla, who is a past pupil of our school! Carla also won the Player of the Match award for the final where she scored both of Dublin's two goals.

This is our Active School Flag (ASF) Committee. They act as playground leaders in the school. They will be counting the kilometres of how far we are walking and running on the Active School Walkway. They will also be distributing and collecting playground equipment on the playgrounds at break times. They will also be looking after the music zone on the playground which is an area of the playground for dancing.

Work has commenced on our Active School Walkway. This is Christy, our caretaker working with the 6th class Active School Flag (ASF) Committee members to set up the walkway around the school.

This is our newly elected Student Council. They are preparing for the year ahead. The Student Council chose the design of our new Homework Journal 2018/19. They made a great choice.

Some of our 6th Class pupils are working as Playground Buddies to our new Junior Infants to help them to settle into life on the school playground.

Well done to 2nd Class on a wonderful performance of Billy the Bus! It was 20 years since it was performed when Ms Kinane was a pupil in the class and Ms Donnelly was the teacher. Lovely to come full circle! The children's sign language throughout the play was inspiring!

Thanks to one of our parents Philip for arranging a visit from the Skerries Coastguard. All the classes heard a very informative presentation. They also participated in stretcher carrying and got to see the jeeps and equipment the Coastguard use!

The winning 6th class Junior Entrepreneur Programme (JEP) team who successfully pitched their idea of a St Bearnignus teddy bear to the 'Dragons'. The bears will be for sale in the near future!

2nd Class celebrate World Book Day 2018

Book Day 2018 being celebrated in 4th Class. Nicky Maxwell (Dark Diaries), George (George's Marvellous Medicine), Little Bear (Goldilocks), Penny (Girl Online), Fern (Charlotte's Web), Frank (Heroes of Olympus), Matilda, Belle (Beauty and the Beast), Harry Potter and Hermione Granger).

1st class on their tree walk to Ardgillan Park for National Tree Day 2017. This trip was made possible thanks to the Voluntary Contributions of parents.

 

Some of our pupils standing in front of the new fence installed around the perimeter of the school over the Summer. Thanks to the Balscadden Fundraising Group for their contribution towards the cost of the new fence, which was raised from the Tractor Run 2017.

 

New Flooring was installed in the wet areas of six classrooms over the Summer thanks to fundraising from our Christmas Fairs.

 

Congratulations to all the 6th class pupils who celebrated their End of Year ceremony and Prize giving on Friday, 23rd June.

  • JEP Initiative: The Junior Entrepreneur Programme (JEP) is in full flight at present in 6th class. The 'Dragon's Den' style presentations took place on Thursday, 14th March to choose the project that goes forward.

  • First Confessions 2019: The First Confessions Ceremony will take place on Wednesday, 20th March at 11am in Balscadden Church. Parents are welcome to attend but are not obliged.

  • World Down Syndrome Day 2019: The school will be celebrating World Down Syndrome Day on Thursday, 21st March, 2019. We are asking everyone to 'Rock their Socks'!

  • School Closure: The school has been instructed by the Dept of Education to close on Friday, 29th March to facilitate staff professional development in the Primary Language Curriculum. There will be no school for our pupils on that day.

  • Football Training has resumed for the gaelic football teams on Tuesdays, 2.45-3.45pm.

  • Active School Flag Celebration: We will be celebrating our second Active School Flag on Friday, 5th April, 2019. We have some fun activities planned!

  • Choir Trip 2019: The choir trip 2019 will take place on Wednesday, 10th April, 2019 to see War Horse in the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre.

  • Service of Light: The Service of Light for 6th class Confirmation pupils will take place on Thursday, 11th April, 2019 at 7.30pm in Balscadden Church.

  • Little Music Makers 2019: All junior classes enjoyed 4 music workshops with Maria Sheil from Little Music Makers.

  • Swimming 2019: 3rd Class have now completed their swimming lessons.

  • Sacraments 2019: Confirmation will take place on Tuesday, 30th April in Balscadden Church. Time to be confirmed. First Holy Communion will take place on Saturday, 11th May at 10am in Balscadden Church.

  • School Choir 2018: Congratulations to the choir on an outstanding performance on Sunday 9th December in the Bracken Court Hotel supporting the Balbriggan Cancer Support Group. Their tribute to Anne Mangan was heart warming and uplifting for all present. Special thanks to Ms McGonigle, Ms Kinane and all the staff members who made this event happen.

  • Anne Mangan: It is with the deepest sorrow that we learned of the passing of one of our parents Anne Mangan. We extend our deepest sympathies to her husband John, her son Kevin in 4th class and her daughter Katie in 3rd class. They are in our thoughts and our prayers at this difficult time.

  • Calendar 2019: The photographs for our 2019 Calendar were taken on 19th November.  Thanks to the Parents' Association for all their organisation of this. Calendars are now for sale in the school, €12 per calendar or €20 for 2.

  • Setanta Book Catalogues: This year we sent home Setanta Book catalogues with all children (November). This was instead of our Book Fair as a trial this year as the books in the catalogue are priced far better than the Book Fair books.

  • Christmas Quiz 2018: The annual family Christmas Quiz took place on Friday, 30th November. Congratulations to all our winners in the quiz and the raffle

  • Balscadden NS welcomes our past pupil role models: We will welcome back two past pupils on Friday, 16th November, 2018 as part of our St Benignus Day celebrations. Carla Rowe, All-Ireland winning footballer with Dublin and Emily Whelan, International soccer player with Ireland return to inspire the children to emulate their achievements. Carla will be in the school 9am-10am with the All-Ireland Cup and Emily will call in the afternoon after 1.15pm. Parents welcome. Children are to wear their school tracksuit. Dublin and Ireland jerseys can be worn under the tracksuit.

  • Basketball Workshop: As part of our Active School Initiative and promoting local partnerships we had a basketball workshop in the school on Friday, 16th November, 2018. All classes took part.

  • Marathon Relay and St John's Ward, Crumlin Hospital: We raised 4416 from sponsorship of the Marathon Relay in aid of St John's Ward, Crumlin Hospital. Thanks to all the children who took part and thanks to everyone who sponsored us!

  • Parent Teacher Meetings 2018: Parent Teacher Meetings took place on Wednesday, 14th November and Thursday, 15th November after school. Thanks to all who attended and thanks to the Parents' Association for providing tea, coffee and biscuits.

  • Maths Week took place 15th-19th October. Thanks to all the parent volunteers.

  • Marathon Relay: As part of our Active School Flag activities we hosted our first ever Marathon Relay in the school on Monday, 22nd October, 2018. All the children and staff took part as we clocked up a full marathon!

  • Tree Day was celebrated in the school on 4th October, 2018. First class went on a very active trip to Ardgillan Park to do a tree walk and engage in some land art.

  • Anti-bullying Week took place in the school 24th-28th September, 2018.

  • Meet and Greet: Meet and Greet for parents and staff took place on Monday, 17th September.

  • Sports Conditioning: Our senior classes (3rd-6th) are doing Sports Conditioning training with the coaches from Fingal County Council every Wednesday for 6 weeks.

  • Irish Dancing for All Classes: Classes have begun in Irish Dancing for all classes junior infants to 6th Class every Tuesday for 10 weeks.

  • Start of Year: Please ensure all jumpers, cardigans and PE tops have child's name on them.

  • Medical Treatment: One of our pupils is receiving medical treatment for cancer. Please notify all cases of Chicken Pox, Measles or Shingles to us in a timely manner.

  • Lucy has a Tumour: This is a child friendly story which explains to the children what cancer is. To download click here.

  • St Benignus Day was celebrated in the school on Friday, 16th November, 2018.

  • End of Year Ceremony: The End of Year Ceremony for 6th class pupils took place on Friday, 22nd June in the school hall, followed by a disco in the Community Hall. Thanks to the Parents' Association for all their help.

  • Report Cards: Report Cards were posted on 20th June. Please send in a Stamped Addressed Envelope if you have not already.

  • Active Week 2018 took place on the week of 11th June, 2018.

  • Parents' Association AGM took place on Thursday, 14th June.

  • Sports Day 2018: Sports Day took place on Tuesday, 12th June, 2018. We hope you all enjoyed a great day!

  • Junior Infants 2018: Induction evening for the parents of Junior Infants 2018 took place on Wednesday, 6th June at 8pm. There was a class visit for the pupils on Thursday, 7th June.

  • Balscadden Tractor Run 2018 took place on Sunday, 27th May, 2018. Thanks to all  the parents who volunteered on the day and also helped out with baking and organising the Junior Tractor Run. Thanks to Art Office for sponsoring all the prizes for the colouring competition and the Junior Tractor Run.

  • Art Event 2018: Every class has done artwork inspired by the work of Dutch artist Piet Mondrian. The artwork is on display in the porch, corridor and the hall. Feel free to drop in and have a look!

  • St Patrick's Day Walk to School: Walk to school and Car free day in Balscadden took place on Friday, 16th March.

  • Cyber-Bullying and Internet Safety: Thanks to Pat McKenna from Childwatch.ie for his work with 5th and 6th class and their parents on 21st March.

  • First Confessions took place on Tuesday, 13th March, 2018 at 11.30am.

  • Photography Day took place on Tuesday, 27th February, 2018. We hold a photography day every two years. Family photographs taken in all classes. No individual photographs in JI (already taken in September), 2nd (Communion) or 6th (Confirmation). Individual photos in SI, 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th. Proofs will be sent home to choose from. No obligation to purchase.

  • Friendship Week takes place 19th-23rd February.

  • Let's stop cyber-bullying: A letter was sent home with all senior class pupils (3rd-6th) regarding our approach to cyber-bullying and internet safety. We will be inviting in a specialist speaker on internet safety on Wednesday, 21st March. Please note change of date!

  • 10@10 took place on Friday, 9th February, 2018 as part of Operation Transformation and the renewal of our Active Flag.

  • Little Music Makers is up and running on Mondays for Junior Infants, Senior Infants, 1st class and 2nd Class with Maria Sheil for 4 weeks in the second term.

  • Flu Season: In order to prevent the spread of flu we are asking pupils to bring in a face cloth as a towel to dry their hands in a zip lock or toiletry bag. The bag can also include a small hand sanitiser and a small soap if desired.

  • Swimming Lessons are taking place during the second term for 3rd class. The lessons began on Tuesday, 9th January and will continue on Tuesdays for 6 weeks in Aura, Drogheda. A bus will be provided for transport. Fee is €40 per pupil. The cost is subsidised by the school. Payment can be sent to the class teacher.

  • School Photography Day takes place every two years. This year it takes place on Tuesday, 27th February, 2018.

  • Our Christmas Choir nights 2017 took place on Tuesday, 12th December and Wednesday, 13th December.

  • The Parents' Association hosted the annual Family Christmas Quiz on Friday, 1st December. Thanks to all the parents who helped out on the night.

  • The Book Fair sold €1753, which earns €1051 worth of books for the class libraries! Thanks to everyone who volunteered over the two days and to all who supported the Book Fair.

  • Our annual Book Fair took place on Wednesday, 29th November and Thursday, 30th November. Thanks to parents who volunteered on the two days.

  • Congratulations to the our pupils Finnan, Dylan and Max Wherity on their great achievements in the Mini Moto competitions. Best of luck in your last race of the Winter Championship!

  • Parent-Teacher Meetings 2017 took place on Wednesday, 15th November and Thursday, 16th November.

  • Science Week 2017 took place from 13th-17th November.

  • St Benignus Day 2017 was celebrated on Friday, 17th November. We had Lee from Skip Hop for the day thanks to the voluntary contributions of parents.

  • Traffic Consultation: The Board of Management are looking into ways of improving the traffic and parking situation at the school. Submissions were accepted from local residents and parents in writing. Thank you to all those who took the time to submit their proposals.

  • Jersey Day 2017 took place on Friday, 13th October. We raised raised €417. Proceeds go towards the Join Our Boys, Duchenne Research Foundation. www.joinourboys.org

  • Tree Day 2017 was celebrated in the school on Thursday, 5th October. First Class visited Ardgillan Park for a tree walk.

  • Our annual Meet and Greet 2017 for parents took place on Monday, 18th September 2.40-3.40.

  • Anti-Bullying Week 2017 took place 25th-29th September.

  • Maths Week 2017 took place from 16th-20th October. Thanks to all the parent voliunteers.
