Green Schools Committee
In 2006 Balscadden NS was awarded a Green Flag for their efforts in
reducing waste. In January 2008 the first Green Flag was renewed, and
the school were also awarded a second Green Flag for their efforts in
reducing energy usage in the school. Well done to Ms McGonigle and all
the children in helping realise this achievement. We are currently
working towards earning the next green flag for water!

Helpful tips on saving the environment
Work out how much water you use every week with the help
of the totals listed below.
normal shower 35 litres
power shower 70 litres
bath 80 litres
brushing teeth with running tap 70 litres
washing your hands 6 litres
drink per glass/cup
0.25 litres
washing machine load 80 litres
dishwasher load 25 litres
flushing the toilet 9
litres
watering the garden per hour 600 litres

These products can all be made at home and are environmentally friendly.
Creamy soft scrubber:
Pour about half a cup of baking soda into a bowl and add a few drops of
liquid detergent and enough water to make a texture like icing. Scoop
the mixture onto a sponge and wash the surface. You can add 1 teaspoon
of vegetable glycerine to the mixture and store in a sealed glass jar to
keep it moist. Otherwise just make as much as you need at a time.
Window cleaner:
¼ to ½ teaspoon of liquid detergent
3 tablespoons of vinegar
2 cups of water
spray bottle
Put all of the ingredients into a spray bottle, shake it up a bit and
use as you would a commercial brand. The soap in this recipe is
important as it cuts the wax residue from the commercial brands you
might have used in the past.
Floor cleaner:
1/8 cup liquid soap or detergent
¼ to ½ cup of white distilled vinegar
½ cup of strong peppermint herb tea (contains antibacterial qualities)
Combine ingredients in a bucket. Swirl the wash around until it is sudsy
then proceed to mop as normal.
